A few weeks earlier, Dan, Minas husband, woke abruptly in their bedroom awash in blood. But no Mina---her body was gone. With so much blood at the crime scene the medical examiner calculated Mina could not have survived. Dan Jensen faces murder charges.

Thats when he calls his high school friend, Ted Rohrbacher. Ted, a former prosecutor, vowed to never touch another criminal case. But when Dan begs for help, Ted reluctantly takes on the case of overwhelming evidence. After all, its usually the husband.Ted enlists a former cop turned private investigator, Samantha Carter, to help him.

Dan served with the military in Afghanistan and returned with a rare mental illness condition. Dans psychiatrist discloses that Dans illness is called the Amygdala Hijack, a condition where part of the brain, called the amygdala, mis-fires before the rational part of the brain can react. It causes people to do acts of violence they normally wouldnt do---beyond their control.

Did Dan really kill his wife under an Amygdala Hijack episode? Or can this be a defense to murder charges?Ted knows this kind of mental illness defense has never been tried before in the state of Minnesota. Its going to be a long shot, but then---thats his specialty. Intrigued, maybe he can even set a new precedent in the law of not guilty by reason of mental illness.

The law hasnt been updated for a hundred years in spite of advances in psychiatric and neurological research.Mina was no angel. She was having an affair. The forensic evidence puts the strange man at the crime scene. With the mans history of violence, could he be the real killer?

Can Ted prove it to try and get his clients case dismissed?Dan admits receiving a series of threatening contacts from the brother of a man killed in Afghanistan under Dans command. The brother blames Dan for the death. Ted and Samantha discover this man and his long history of criminal activity including homicide. A mystery man---could he be the real murderer? And where is Minas body? The politically ambitious media hound prosecutor, Sandford Rogin, fights Ted at every step with dirty tactics.

Although its legally possible to convict a person of murder without a dead body, it will be difficult for the prosecutor Rogins still confident he can win because of the overwhelming forensic evidence---even without a body. The list of suspects lengthens and theres a potential mental illness defense, but the case starts to fall apart. Dans own behavior makes him look guilty- he wont cooperate with Ted and accuses him of being incapable to handle the defense.Teds got more problems. His wife demands he get out of criminal law because when Ted was fired from the prosecutors office, it almost tore his family apart.

Now that hes taken on the defense of Dan, she threatens to leave Ted unless he gets rid of the case immediately. Can Ted keep his marriage together long enough to solve the crime and win the case? When the Chief Judge insists Dans murder trial start, Ted struggles to win the toughest case of his life---with a client who suffers from the Amygdala Hijack and may really be guilty of killing his wife.
