KiNgozi isMoreThe Hamziyyah without doubt is a masterpiece of Swahili poetry, not only for bringing out the eulogy of the Prophet Muhammad in poetic expression, but also for serving as a treasure-house of old Swahili vocabulary of the kiNgozi dialect. KiNgozi is believed to be the proto-Swahili and was spoken in the ancient time in Kismayu and North of Lamu in a town called Ngozi and the tribe of the people called Wangozi.

The Hamziyyah is believed to be the oldest known Swahili translation of an Arabic text. The maulidi festival (the anniversary of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad) in Lamu follows the lunar calendar and it is celebrated on a particular day of the week rather than a particular date. For this celebration, visitors come from as far away as Europe, America, Tanzania Bara (mainland), Zanzibar, Somalia, and even the Saudi Arabian peninsula, as well as from many of the towns and villages on the coast of Kenya. During the maulidi festival, residents of Pate for instance perform the Hamziyyah.

For this reason, the Prophets veneration has pre-occupied the minds of the Experts of Pate and inspired them to perform it verbatim to an audience during the maulidi festival. To them, this is the most honorable way to venerate the Prophet. They spend many long nights discussing the image of the Prophet Muhammad as versified in the Hamziyyah and regard the Hamziyyah as an epitaph of the Prophet, and a complete eulogy of the Prophet.

This book dicusses the performative aspect of the Hamziyyah, and attempts to answer the following questions: Who performs it, and who listens to it? What are the occasions, places, and times of performances? What is the poetry like, and what are its subjects andcontents?

How is it performed and listened to?
